I haven’t been able to keep up with LJ lately even though I don’t read selected “friends” LJs. I’ve just gone through and removed tons of people. What’s left is mostly people that I directly know.

I have a LJ group called “friend’s I read” and another called “friends I read when I have more time”. I never remove a friend, I just add them to that second group. Sadly, I don’t think I’ve “had more time” in about, ohhh... 2 years. So really it is just a way for me to remove people without feeling bad.

I know a lot of people post a message like, “Everyone can read this. I’m also posting a message that is restricted to my ‘friends that I read’ list. If you don’t see that one, suck it. I mean... umm.. sorry but I just don’t have time.

My answer is slightly different than what you gave as options, so I'll put it here.

I don't expect anyone to read everything, or even anything, I post just because they have me listed as a friend. Nor do I expect them to inform me either way. If you want to read what I post, please do. If you don't have time, feel free not to. If we ever have reason to communicate that is vitally important, I assume we'll use a communication method more formal than our LJ friends lists. :)

Yes, pretty much exactly that.

Do what you want, but I feel like the whole announcement thing is unnecessary. I feel like people who care one way or another are probably putting a little too much emotional weight into LJ.

Also, if you're not reading my LJ I clearly need more blow-by-blow release engineering and/or sex stories. ;)

Frankly, I thought that LJ was mostly just a write-only medium for you :-)

Just because I ignore people's advice doesn't mean I don't listen :-)

Where does that leave people who never write?

They are a key part of my time management system :-)

I actually have a bunch of filters like that, which I read in order by priority (highest given to those I know in person or whose writings I really like), and I don't tell anyone which one they're on...nor do I assume anyone reads everything I post. I wouldn't bother to post a "Yay you, you're special enough to be on my must-read filter!" announcement, as I doubt anyone would care. And besides, now that you've posted this, anyone who doesn't see your filtered post will be all hurt because you hate them. :-)

Yeah, I have a fairly complicated filter list, too, for reading, very similar to what you described. (I don't do much for posting, though. Just one filter that's about stuff I document but isn't much fun to read.)

In my opinion, LiveJournal carries no obligation, express or implied.

Isn't part of time management reducing unecessary drama?

Whyever would you *promote* drama by being so explicit as to tell people "I don't have time to read you"?

Read or not, as you wish -- but some stories don't get told in public. (wink wink nudge nudge)

Good point about reducing unnecessary drama :-)

(Don't worry, you're still on my list :-) )

I use filters kind of like that (although in my case, there's the short list I always try to catch up on, the somewhat longer list I usually read, and the one that has almost everyone, which I read when procrastinating). But in my case, it's a lot more fluid. Since the goal is to match the number of posts I read to the amount of time I spend reading (as adjusted for how good they are, and how interested I am in the individual), it's not number of users that matters, it's number of posts. Some people post several times a day, others post every week or two, and others post a few times a year. I could have 50 people who post about once a month on my filter and it'd take up less "space" as one person who usually posts multiple times a day. Since people's posting frequency changes over time, I sometimes remove people who post "too much" (if I'm less interested in what they post), but also sometimes add back people who used to be very posty but have cut back. It's not that I have more time, it's that they are less of a load on my time.

(And actually, one of the reasons I post so infrequently is that I figure people are more likely to read me regularly when I don't have much impact on their friends page size, but I've found that some people actually work the other way - they're more likely to remove me for not posting often enough. I can't quite wrap my head around it, but so it is. I guess I tune my style to people who think more like me :)

My guess is that you don't currently read my LJ. That's okay with me -- I don't read lots of my flist. FWIW I currently read your LJ but there was a while there where I didn't. I think I started again when I met [livejournal.com profile] grendelgongon and he asked me if I knew you. I said to myself, "Wonder what Tom's up to?"
