This year I filed my 2006 taxes on time but I also re-filed my 2005 taxes as I had found some additional income that I should have declared. It’s better to declare before the IRS does their reconciliation process (matches up what employers say vs. what you said) 24-36 months after the filing deadline.

I had to pay an additional (approximate) $1000 as a result.

No fines if you correct a mistake before they find it. This was all just the difference in how much I should have paid in 2005.
