It’s been pointed out to me that Jon Corzine is the third recent New Jersey governor to break a leg while in office. James McGreevey broke his left leg in 2002, and Christine Todd Whitman broke her right leg in 1999.

The other two both resigned. I think Corzine already did his only resignation of a state-wide office. But maybe he'll get electged vice-President. He'd be a reasonable chioce for Obama or Richardson (but not, I think, for Clinton or Edwards).

Will his ego allow him to take the number two spot on a ticket? I do agree with you though that could see him balancing out a ticket with a non-traditional candidate at the head.

I have a theory that a lot of people don't mind or even like the idea of a non traditional candidate (a woman, black, hispanic, asian, whatever) but when they actually get into the voting booth, they get get cold feet and opt to vote for the familiar. (I don't have any empirical proof, it's just a hunch.)

Someone with Corzine's mid western roots and east coast experience, might make voters more comfortable voting for a Richardson or Obama.

Also, given the critical nature of his injuries and the time he'll need to recover, I doubt that Corzine will resign from office but I wouldn't be 100% surprised if he did. Injuries that severe are life changing and I'm sure he's at some point he'll have to think about whether the job is worth the aggravation. I think he'll stay but you never know.

Black candidates routinely do several percentage points worse in the actual election than they do in pre-election polls. The conventional wisdom on why is that some people tell the pollster they'll vote for the black candidate, because they don't want to be perceived as racist. It's possible that the reason has more to do with your hunch.

I think the broken legs are a mafia plot to keep the govs in line. But then again, I'm a bit psychotic.

I do wonder, though, if they will make good on their promise to issue him a citation for not wearing his seatbelt and if he'll wear one in the future.

as long as they give the cop a ticket too since he was driving over 90MPH!!

The cop was driving with emergency lights on, which makes it legal.

Take it from an EMT with a blue light permit... Just because you have emergency warning lights on does NOT make it legal to break the law... You still have to obey all traffic laws... The only exception is if the police are actively pursuing a suspect...

I was going in part by what the Superintendant 9i think) of the State police was saying on the radio. He said there was no maximum speed in the standard operating procedures for troopers escorting officials around the state. The clear implication (though perhaps a false, weasely implication) was that there was no maximum by law, either.

Part of why your post amuses me is that, on the subway coming home tonight, I was pondering the fact that his accident created headlines that overshadowed the planned meeting between Imus and the Rutgers basketball team. And I started wondering which side of that meeting would have more of a motivation for it to get buried out of the headlines.

Conspiracy for everyone! Whee! :)

Everyone keeps talking about the red pickup, but it was a white truck that actually hit the Governor's car. . . Red and White (and black, the color of the Governor's car) are the Scarlet Knight's colors.

COINCIDENCE?
