My husband used to wear at least one. But he's a jazz bassist, so it's a career limiting move being white. It was really a sign of ambition on his part.
I wore them in the '70s, and I'm a white guy! I wore one to my first day of law school in 1978 (along with elbow-length frizzy hair, a ZZ Top beard, and an eyepatch [I had a minor corneal burn the previous week from a cigarette end that flew off in the wind]).
