The first sign? Overpriced, unhealthy restaurants are having trouble.

At this rate, the big crash will start to happen right as we enter the election cycle making it easier for a Republican candidate running on the “I’m not Bush”-platform, or a Democrat running on the same platform, to do quite well. Either way, there’s no way Bush Jr will have a third term.

Oh wait...

I'm just assuming that they have a plan in place for 2008 for a major crisis which will 'require' martial law and a suspension of the elections. They've been quietly working to make that easier to do.

Actually it's worse than that.

I've suspected that they might try such a thing for a while now.

I think what we will see is that crashh stalled until after the elections. With the Dems in control of at least one house, they will get blamed for the crash when it does happen. The Repubs will fight everything the Dems do, even using filibusters to stops the Dems from accomplishing any useful changes. Then in the 2008 election cycle, the Repubs will try to use that to prove that the Dems cant' do anything right.

Put this in you memories and check back in two years.

"...some of the ominous signs from retailers, such as Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) and its report that spending is clustered closer to what the company believes are paydays for its customers."

Do you know what that means?

Oh, sure, but what does Wal-Mart care about this? I would figure it was business as usual for Wal-Mart and most supermarkets to see much of their business on payday. I'm curious what it means as a market indicator.

I've never been in a Cheesecake Factory, but one thing that strikes me about both them and to a lesser extent Outback is that in recent years they've moved into downtown locations where real food (with better service and probably good drinks) is readily available just a few steps away. It's hard to imagine that being a real successful strategy for them since that whole restaurant category is such a deeply, deeply suburban product. Brands like Texas Roadhouse, BJ's, Elephant Bar, and whatever the hell else you can find in their proper locations clustered around suburban malls are probably doing better. It would probably also help if Cheesecake Factory and Outback did a better job of selling the booze; I'm pretty sure competitor Chevy's is kept afloat by after-work margarita pitchers, but most of these chains don't have that sort of hook. Instead they're trying to make their money off the food (probably necessary with the customers they draw), and that never works.

Bush's 3rd term

I'm just paranoid when I think there will be some sort of terrorist attack in mid-2008 that causes the President to impose martial law and suspend the Constitution, thus keeping himself in power as a military dictator, right? RIGHT?

I fear scenarios that are even worse.
