According to a study published in the Journal of Research Into Personality, whiny children tend to grow up to be conservatives.

Update: Oops, I forgot to include the link. It is as serious as any social research reported in the news today.

Okay, is this serious, or a joke? Because it totally makes sense to me. And if it's serious, I have to send it to my liberal friends who struggle with dealing with their whiny child. :)

As much as I'd like for it to be true, I've got to question the name of the journal. Either it is a joke, or they really should have considered the name a bit better before commiting to it. Journal of Personality Research, I might believe.

I have not actually checked whether such a journal exists, but I know a few Librarians hang out here, and checking should be a simple matter of consulting some super Librarian resource.

It's a real journal. At least, if they're talking about Journal of Research In Personality. Not "Into". In any case, it's been published since the mid-1960s.

I just have one question. What kid is NOT whiny? I mean, seriously, all kids whine. All kids have whiny phases.

Much as we wish it were otherwise...

My friend Ann has identical twins. One whines, one does not. Go figure.

My son doesn't whine. He is nine now, but he really never has whined. In part because his personality isn't that type, and in part because we have a no whining rule in our house. We expect people (of all ages) to ask for what they want/need, and if we can give it to them, we will. If not, we will understand being upset, but how one feels does not justify whining.

Just sayin'.

I found it via the March 19th berkeley.edu "UC Berkeley in the news" feature, so it seems legit.

Well, my highly conservative brother-in-law is going to have some issues with his son's politics when the kid grows up...

Interesting. Especially since my concept is that all children try whining, and whether or not they continue it has a lot to do with parenting. Whining is one of the things I least tolerate. I tolerate mischievousness, subterfuge, clinginess, and staying up until the wee hours of the morning much more easily. But I try never giving in to whining. Children who whine do so because it works for them, so maybe conservatives were taught to let the authorities solve things for them?

Then again, my original theory could be wrong. I find that parents making parenting theory based off of only the data in their own household is incredibly non-useful. Too much genetics in the way, perhaps, and much too little data.

Also, it makes me wonder about myself. I know for a fact that I whined with my mother, because she always gave in, and never with my father, because he never did. And so, I'm mostly pretty liberal, but a bit of a traditionalist in certain things. And do I thank my slightly more conservative father for turning me into the liberal that I am?

I was a huge whiner spoiled brat but I grew out of that at 22/23. Being an only child is fun!

Oh, but I am not a republican.
