Making up a website under a name that we can choose?

I've got a gmail account (well, many), and a geocities site under my Pro-Domme name, but I'd love to get a general site for all my random shite.

Yes, it means that if you have the domain "example.com", you can direct email to a gmail and then you'll be able to log into example.com (I don't know if it is mail.example.com or example.com/mail or even gmail.com/example.com-hey-i-wanna-get-my-email) and you'll get a gmail.com-like interface. You'll have a dashboard that lets you create accounts, set options, etc.

I speculate that it will be more attractive to organizations that have a number of accounts they want to give out. If you only have one email address at the domain, gmail already has that solution. Just forward that email to your gmail.com account. Go into "Settings" and set yourself so that you can send email from gmail.com that has your me@example.com address in the From: line (see link.

Ah, but to do that, you have to have an MX record for your domain already. For something like http://www.sheeri.com, I don't. This is the perfect solution for me, so I can have sheeri.com addresses.

Cute. Pity they want to own your MX -- if this worked by speaking IMAP to my servers and maintaining a local index, I'd be all over it for my domains. (iname/mail.com used to offer something like that as 'webmail.com', except it was pop3-only. I keep waiting for someone to do a decent IMAP implementation, and will apparently keep waiting.)

That wouldn't be efficient for the common case, which is things like SJCC. But that is interesting.

That's a simple change to your DNS zone. If your DNS host won't let you change your zone data, you can switch providers.

No, I know that. What I'm saying is that I don't want to install anything to *handle* an MX record. I don't want to deal with setting up an e-mail system, even a tiny one that has a catch-all that forwards to gmail. I don't want to chance that my server will be down, and I'll get delayed mail while that happens.

That's what the service is (or is that what you are saying?)

You set your MX record to google. Your A-record to your web server. All done!

Right -- that's what I was saying. It's not just great for busineses, but for folks like me that own their own doman and want an address@domain, but don't want the hassle of setting up an exim/sendmail server.
