Straight to Hell Returns

Friday night C and I were wandering around The Village and popped into Rocks In Your Head and were really impressed at the music they had. I didn’t used to enjoy record stores when I was younger, now I love going into old record stores as a walk down memory lane.

When I was in college my friend Paul Coen introduced me to the soundtrack of Straight To Hell. This movie is terrible (I’ve never seen it, though I recently picked up the DVD). However, it has a soundtrack that is amazing: The Pogues, Joe Strummer, Pray for Rain, Zander Schloss, and others.

While the movie went nowhere, the soundtrack sold to every Pogues fan in the world, and many other indie/punk fans. My favorite song was “Salsa Y Ketchup”: (link)

The musical number is a cute little ditty called “Salsa y Ketchup” performed by town loser Karl the wiener boy (Zander Schloss). At gunpoint the poor sap is forced to sing his company’s – well, independent venture capitalist’s – theme song. As the quirky novelty tune unspools the locals join in for one tremendous sing-a-long. Such a shame Mr. Cox didn’t have the lyrics show up, along with the bouncing ball, so that the viewer could partake in the merriment.

I’ve been searching for this album so that I can play that song. At Rocks In Your Head, I found “Straight To Hell Returns”. This is the soundtrack plus many previously unreleased tracks.

How busy have I been? I’ve been so busy that I’m just now unwrapping the packaging. It’s Thursday. I’ve ripped it into iTunes. However, I’m sitting in a meeting and it would be rude to start playing music until I get back to my office.

Hey, I love that movie! Granted that it is technically awful on many levels, but how many cowboy movies starring the Pogues as Mexican bandits are there?
