Brenda and I worked on “keeping the flame alive” to bring a major celebration to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. I drove into NYC once a month to attend a meeting with her and a few other people, mostly Stonewall vets, to work out how to make sure that people attending MOW93 heard about Stonewall25 the next year. Often we met in a tiny broomcloset-sized space at The Center. After MOW93, Steve Ault, Brenda and others built what would become the international movement to celebrate SW25.
She never made a big deal about it, but she really created the concept of the June Gay Pride March. She coordinated the 1-month anniversary rally and the 1-year rally/march which became the annual Pride March which we all celebrate today, in every state, in nearly every country around the world.
When people ask why June is Pride month someone always explains about the Stonewall Riots. I always take the time to explain that it wouldn’t have happened without the work of bisexual activist Brenda Howard.
I’ve known Brenda for more than 15 years and didn’t get a chance to say goodbye.
I encourage the entire GLBTI community to attend her memorial and to celebrate her life in their publications and pride activities.
Tom

Here is a very small example of who Brenda was:
<> She was a major bisexual activist who was a major force in having the first march that commemorating Stonewall.
<> She invented pride week.
<> She Ran the New York Area Bisexual Network info line. Recording messages that give out info about NYC bi groups and returning calls. She got the number listed in the (now Verizon) yellow pages and the center happenings and other newspapers.
<> She ran many groups at “The Center”, the bi-sm group and the bi-AA groups to name only two.
<> She was a member of BiPAC a bi activist group for many years in the 80’s and 90’s
<> She was involved in countless activist projects and campaigns on behalf of the whole GLBT communities
