There has been a lot of news lately about military recruiters being desperate to fill their quotas (”their mission”). The latest news is that it turns out that parents are putting them between their children and the recruiters to try to stop them.

I don’t understand why Bush, Jr. doesn’t just send all orphans to the military. No parents to get in the way. We must have hundreds of kids the right age in government-funded orphanages. Isn’t this an obvious solution?

Or maybe College Republicans should all joinlogo

Lovely. Right up there with when Moore and co. were asking Republican Senators to sign up their children for Iraq.

Forget orphans -- change the laws to require that welfare benefits are only paid after completing military service.

Shazaam! Two birds, one stone.

Except that the average welfare recipient is only on welfare for 6 months, so all the libertarian crybaby bullshit about people on welfare is pretty much bullshit that they keep perpetuating. The reality is that welfare does what it was intended to do: give a helping hand to someone with a temporary problem.

That was the statistic in 1991. When Clinton added the life-time cap in the late 90's I have to assume the average got even lower.

I know there's sarcasm intended. (or at least I hope there is). But I wished to mention something interesting: one state tried the welfare = military service thing and found that most people on welfare aren't fit to be in the military. Heh.

...and since no state has actually ever done that, I'll paypal you $50 if you can prove a state that did.

According to my mother (who would've commented but doesn't have an LJ to do so with) - there are no gov't funded orphanages.

...mentioned because after she read your post I had to hear about it for about an hour.

That's a good point. Since I prefer my jokes to be accurate, I should have said "all orphanages".
