About 10 years ago I worked at Bell Labs. Many of my co-workers were from India.

On my first day at work we went out to eat at an Indian restaurant and I ate with a knife and fork, and they used their hands. The next day we sent out for pizza and they ate with knife and fork and I used my hands

True story.

I didn't know Indian food was typically eaten with one's hands in India. Interesting.

(My father eats pizza with a knife and fork, but this european method didn't stick with us kids.)

Did you fold the pizza?

And if I'm not mistaken, that's why Indian food is usually served with copious quantities of flat breads, and why it's mostly stews and sauces--you scoop with the bread.

When my wonderful, ethnically Korean husband first went to university, he took himself out to dinner at an Indian restaurant. He had never been to one before, but he had Indian friends and knew it was customary to eat with one's right hand. So he did. Despite Anglo table-neighbours who goggled at him and said, "He must be hungry!"

Which of course is a display of some of his wonderfulness.
