After being mentioned by John Kerry at the presidential debate last week, anti-stem cell activists aligned with the Bush campaign killed Christophe Reeve to prevent further damage to their cause of stopping science from curing diseases.

Spokesperson for the Bush Campaign, Lex Luthor, read the following statement:

Ba ha ha ha ha. Ha ha ha ha! I win! I always win. Is there no one on this planet to even challenge me?!

That's "Luthor".

that's a bit .. in poor taste, even for you, and this election..

imho..

"even for me"? Wow, that hurts!

mostly, it just surprised me.. despite having obvious preferences and leanings, you generally seem .. straightforward? objective? reasonable? and the statement you made, even if in jest, seemed like a particularly cheap shot..

Eh--I took it in the humor in which it appeared to be meant.

Were you upset when South Park had their Stem Cell episode (http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-344/epid-237007) "starring" Christopher Reeve?

I've known Tal for a while.. he has a very sick and twisted sense of humor (hell, it's one of the reasons I like him so much)--and frankly, who didn't have thoughts of Lex Luthor when they heard the news?

So if I had just written "Gosh, I bet a million anti stem-cell nazis are doing the 'happy dance' right now (after making sure no cameras are recording it)" you would have felt that was much more reasonable?

I don't think they are, though. I think the anti-stem-cell nazis (assuming there are some) don't draw the cause and effect relationship. *shrug*

It's not the first time this season you've made light of someone's death in an attempt to make a political point.

I've had so many deaths in my family and circle of friends in the last 18 months that I deserve to be able to laugh about death.

Then you should! Really! However, the evidence seems to suggest that your readers find the tone of your public postings deeply disrespectful and/or disturbing. I'm assuming that's not the effect you were seeking (though of course I could be wrong).

This is another instance where you have taken the pain of others and decided to use it to further your personal political goals.

Upon reading this post, I had no idea that Christopher Reeve had actually died. I just figured you were posting something in bad taste again.

It's disturbing because that's a way of campaigning which has a ... oh, heck, a rather Republican stench to it. Something I'd not be surprised if a spokesman or rampant supporter of Bush would say, but is surprising from even a fanatical Democrat.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you're a fanatical Democrat, the world can probably use more of them.

But I do think that you've gone over the lines a couple of times in your campaign for this election, and that's disappointing, especially when it is at the cost of personal pain and anguish to others. (Or taking advantage of the personal pain and anguish of others. I certainly don't think that you killed Christopher Reeve to further your political goals!)

That is in really poor taste. Do you know Why christopher reeves died? Do you know what caused him to go into cardiac arrest? If not, let me know and i'll tell ya

Now i'm all for stem cell research, but get your facts before you post stupid stuff like that...

Are you denying that Lex Luthor works for the Bush campaign?

Lex Luthor certainly is an agent for the Shadow Government which set Bush up in the first place. On the other hand... how conveniently coincidental is tragedy? Too convenient for my tastes.

Gallows humor. Always appropriate for any situation!

I know the feeling though. My father died when I was 5, my 11 year old sister was killed by a drunk driver when I was 14...

Death is a fact of life. We're all dying, the question is how we end up going...

Dying at the hands of the anti-embryonic-stem-cell-fanatics governed by Lex Luthor... well... makes a very good point, I think. :)

Who woulda thought that such sensitive types read your journal? I thought it was funny - especially imagining the Republican lair deep in the bowels of Metropolis.

I don't think it's funny because it just makes no sense. Anti-stem-cell activists didn't kill Christopher Reeve, bacteria did. Even if the US rose up as one and embraced stem cell research at the earliest technically feasible opportunity there's no way to know that the outcome wouldn't have been the same for Mr. Reeve.

Um, it was a joke, not a research paper. Don't over analyze. If you don't think it's funny, then you don't. I was just surprised that folks that know Tom would be so sensitive about it.

You shouldn't be surprised that people who know Tom are analytical technical types, either.

Too true. But then, you should you should also be bothered by:
1. Superman is not a real character.
2. Christopher Reeve wasn't really Superman.
3. Lex Luthor is not a real character, and
4. We don't know if Lex Luthor is really Republican.

:-)

I guess you either suspend disbelief on this one or you don't.
