Sep. 30th, 2004 10:08 amFor example: I stumbled across a paragraph in which Dean, discussing No Child Left Behind, writes: “The public school system is the first and last place in America where everybody has to get along with everybody else.” It’s the sort of gem that made Howard Dean the candidate sparkle-- a simple phrase, full of meaning, morality, responsibility. The far-Right would have us abandon public education, so that their kids can go to gated schools to match the gated communties they’ll grow up to live in. Dean, in challenging their policies, somehow manages not only to defend public education, but to evoke at once what is inherently good and American and necessary about that defense.http://mathewgross.com/blog/archives/000696.html
