My last couple days
Sep. 21st, 2002 01:50 pmI'm traveling right now. The plan: Start in New Jersey, fly to Boston to speak Wednesday night, fly to California to speak Thursday night, then spend 2.5 days on vacation in San Francisco with Yang. Then Yang and I fly home together. (Yang is using my frequent flyer miles, of which I have many). So far it is going really well.
Summary: Having a great time, wish you were here :-)
Wednesday AM: worked. I need to get a network-to-network VPN working between two PIXs. I've done this a number of times before, but this one is giving me trouble. I've never taken a Cisco class and I've been considered a Cisco expert for 10 years. Maybe this will push me to doing it.
Wednesday PM: flew to Boston. I had a wonderful dinner at Mary Chung's with some local sysadmins and then spoke at the Boston Linux/Unix group. The audience was a delight to work with. They were very technical and got all my jokes.
I crashed at
awfief's place. She drove me to the airport in the morning.
Thursday: This "after Sept 11th you must go to the airport 2 hours early" stuff is no longer warranted. Check in is instant. I could have, should have, slept in.
I had a hold-over in Houston. Sadly, there was bad weather there and we took off 2 hours late. 2 hours was the buffer I had planned, so when I arrive it was time to high-tail it to the presentation.
kimuchi picked me up and took me over to the BayLISA meeting. Obviously I didn't have time to do what I planned... shave, shower, etc. So I just arrived and started the presentation.
Thursday night Yang had arrived at San Jose airport and was picked up by her friends Brenda and Scott. She spent the night there.
Friday morning kimuchi went to work and I took the train to San Jose. Brenda, Yang and I (oh, and Brenda's infant daughter) went out to lunch where I happen to run into someone I know. We then went to a museum.
Friday night we ate at Chef Chu's in Palo Alto (or possible Los Altos). It was excellent food. Kimuchi met us there, and we went home with her and crashed on her air mattress.
It's now Saturday morning. We're going to a bi event this afternoon and a party at night. More news soon!

Date: 2002-09-22 09:42 am (UTC)Actually, that's untrue. It used to be for domestic flights that you were supposed to get there 1 hour early. Nobody did that, and 1/2 an hour or 20 minutes before your flight you were fucked.
Now, 45 minutes to an hour before your flight you're fucked.
It's like the speed limit -- it's a suggestion, exaggerated so people might actually follow it. 2 hours early is an exaggeration, but if you try to get there 1/2 an hour before your flight you'll probably be fucked.
Then again, 8 am on a Thursday morning isn't a popular flight time. We should have thought of that. Although I probably would have overestimated Boston rush hour traffic anyway, causing us to leave at the same time.
