What's the point of a SAN?

I thought the point of a SAN (Storage Area Network) was:

• A. You can move volumes from machine to machine
• B. You can put a tape-library onto the SAN and have disks magically backup directly to the tape library without sending every bit through a server.

I sat through Apple’s Xsan presentation and not only do they not support B, but they don’t understand why that would be important.

More travelling plans

I have a meeting in SF on Sunday, June 19 (father’s day). It’s a full day 8am-9pm kind of thing. However, I can fly out early or stay late if there are interesting events or people to visit.
