Hi, all! Nationallly, our community has had much internal debate over the role that LGBTI issues, especially marriage equality, played in President Bush’s reelection.
In tomorrow’s (Wed Nov 24) New York Times, the Times will release a national poll with remarkable ramifications. It lends support to those who believe that so-called “moral issues,” including marriage equality, did NOT play a major role in Bush’s win. Given the way the media works, you can bet this poll will not get the same attention that the hype over “moral issues” -- ie blaming LGBTI-related issues for Bush’s win -- got right after the election. So it’s up to all of us in the LGBTI community to spread word about this new poll. In a nutshell, seventy per cent of Kerry’s supporters said they were more worried about candidates who ‘‘are too close to religion and religious leaders’’ than about political leaders who ‘‘don’t pay enough attention’’ to religion. By contrast, only 52 per cent of Bush’s supporters said they were more worried about officials who ‘‘don’t pay enough attention to religion and religious leaders.’’ Thus we can easily construe that at least as many Kerry voters as Bush voters -- perhaps more -- cared about so-called moral values, i.e. OUR side’s moral values.
