Verisign to set up "default web pages".
Sep. 5th, 2003 01:16 pmVerisign is proposing that they set things up so that instead of getting "web page not found" when you mistype a domain name (i.e. www.livvejournal, instead of www.livejournal.com) that a web page from Verisign will be displayed, explaining how to register that domain, search the web, etc. They'll be selling advertising on this page, and making a bundle. They can make this proposal because they unethically became controllers of the "root DNS servers".
The more big business controls the internet, the less of a level playing field it becomes. The more our freedoms are eroded.
You all donate $20-$50 per month to an organization that uses this money to lobby in favor of big-business controlling the internet, right? I mean, you do all pay at least that amount every month to Verizon, AT&T, MCI, or Comcast. Right? (I pay about $220/month: cable, cable internet, phone, cell, cable-isp, etc.)
So, shouldn't you donate at least 2x that to an organization that fights to keep the internet a level playing field? That's why everyone should donate, on a monthly basis, to EFF. If you donate the same amount as you pay to Verzion, AT&T, MCR and Comcast, you're undoing the damage you do, unknowingly, to the level playing field. If you donate 2x the amount, then you are undoing the negative effects of paying your bills, and swinging the pendulum the other way.
Now I can't say that I donate $220/month (or $440/month) to EFF. But I hope this message has put things into perspective for you. The least you can do is pay your yearly membership renewal to EFF. They accept paypal, credit cards, and many other forms of payment:
