Advice to a friend leaving his employer

There's a lot of things I wish I had done.
Send email to you old bosses thanking them for a very long career.
One-by-one, take your favorite co-workers aside and tell them how
much you appreciate them.
One-by-one, take your apprentices aside and instill them with confidence
and let them know that you think they're going to go far.
The the "The Other Side of the Coin" second in the paper about firing sysadmins.
Don't send a "I told you so" email, and avoid any "I should have left when the stock price was at 70" kind of things :-)
Which reminds me, I never told you how much I appreciate you bringing me to Bell Labs. Being at Bell Labs did so much for my career. I didn't realize it until recently. Where else would I have had the freedom to pursue paper writing, conference stuff, and had so many varied experiences. Thanks!
