Why should we care if the U.S. debt is big?

The biggest problem would be that all the Democrat warnings about “bad things happen if we continue Bush’s economic policies” will actually happen. And it is happening:

Luckily, the Republicans will pull out their tired old righteous indignation and say things like, “How could we have known?” line.

I'm pretty much already living by the suggestions listed (I could stand to get a smaller car, although the Saturn is reasonably fuel-efficient), but that doesn't really make it any less scary.
