When dealing with big bureaucracies, go low-tech

I have 2 checking accounts attached to my ATM card. Any time I do a transaction I’m asking an additional question (which checking account?). Third party ATMs often can’t handle this and give me a “please try later” message. Machines in Europe NEVER are able to complete the transaction, which has left me high-and-dry on some trips. Luckily last time it was sheer luck that I was able to recall the PIN on a credit card and do a cash advance.

Today I called the bank and they suggested that I could get a different ATM card, one for each account. I was really tempted. However, then I realized I’m about to leave for Europe and I just want this to freakin’ work so I opted to merge the accounts.
