Republicans are politicians. Democrats govern.

The difference between politics and governing is that politics is how you get elected, governing is what you do after you get elected.

Clinton was excellent at governing. He tuned the tax situation to boost the economy in ways that made the poor richer and the rich richer. He saw FEMA was a disaster and reorganized it and made it the shining star of the federal government. He saw the rise of terror (caused by Reagan and Bush, Sr. “giving in” to terrorists, which gave them encouragement to do more) and reshaped how we address terrorism so that we could fight it better and respond better. (Read Richard Clark’s book for more info about that).

But the Republicans know how to get elected (even when they have to steal the election, or disenfranchise black voters). They just don’t know what the fuck to do once they are in power.

You know, it’s hard to imagine anything worse than coming back to your home in New Orleans and finding it completely destroyed. But, tonight, as you’re about to hear, there is something worse, much worse. Dozens of families have returned to what is left of their homes and found, lying amidst the mold and the wreckage, a body, forgotten, abandoned. Maybe it’s their mother or their grandmother, sometimes even their missing child.

The state called off searching house to house in New Orleans well over a month ago. They said they completed the job.

51.6% of America... you voted for this.

I knew this was going to happen. This whole thing was going to be swept under the rug, because the current administration dosen't want to admit what a complete cluster fuck it really was.

The entire death toll is off by thousands. We will never know the total number dead due to the incompetence of FEMA.

Your assessment of the situation is dead on, in my opinion. Only far superior skills at the winning of elections could explain why such a big part of the country would vote for an administration that does NOT have their best interests at heart.

What troubles me is that I don't see any sign that the Democratic party is going to learn anytime soon how better to win elections. And to stop the current trends of mismanagement, misinformation and overall ugliness in our federal government, that MUST change. If the Democrats don't figure out a way to pick electable, but suited for governing, candidates in the upcoming midterm elections and in the next Presidential elections, I fear that our country is done for.

Someone PLEASE start telling these folks how to pick good opposition to the highly marketable Republicans. PLEASE!

Q: Why do Republicans out-spend Democrats 10-to-1 and yet only win by a couple of votes?

A: It's more expensive to get people to believe bullshit.

Yes, the dems are getting it together. They have really turned things around recently and its starting to show. Look at their "Fighting Democrats" campaign, and other initiatives. Last week they had 1,000 house-parties around the country just to kick off their new get-the-people-on-the-ground-going campaign. Kickoff

And all those evacuees they had in hotels? FEMA is about to kick them out into the streets, just as winter sets in.

That's because they're not in any more danger of storms as of Dec 1.
*Shrugs* Makes perfect sense to me. *growls and grumbles about FEMA*

To be fair (not that I consider myself an apologist for FEMA or anyone else in our current federal government), it wouldn't be reasonable to expect them to keep those folks in hotels forever. And, in the area of the country where most of them are, "winter" isn't really any worse a time to be without a residence than any other time. In fact, it would be much crueler in either New Orleans or Houston to kick them out in the open just as SUMMER came along.

I'm pleased that they altered their plans to not kick them out of the hotels just prior to Thanksgiving. They shifted it to December 1st, which is a kindness, however small.

I've been in Mississippi in December. It gets pretty cold some nights.

51.6% of America... you voted for this.

Is this why you like spreading the interest of "falsifying statistics"? Under 61% of eligible voters actually cast any vote. Under 32% of America voted for this. Our real enemy is voter participation, and only secondarily the election scams of the Republicans.

Sing it, brother! :)

I teach college freshman. Last Wednesday, I asked how many of them had voted in the previous day's elections. In a class of 26, 3 of them raised their hands. I asked those who didn't vote how many of them made that choice because they felt that their vote wasn't really important, didn't really count. About 10 of them raised their hands. I said, "The fastest way to be SURE your vote won't count is to not cast it in the first place." I then went on to explain to them that they would be alive FAR long to feel the effects of decisions made now than would the high turnout generation of their grandparents. I'm hoping our little talk will encourage at least a few of them to vote next time.

Oh, and I wish I could find it for you, but there was an interesting statistic I read the other day related to the fact that Democrats tend to get elected from more populated, urban areas and Republicans get elected from less population-dense areas. The statistic showed that while the Republicans held the majority of seats in both houses of Congress, the number of votes that sent each party to those seats fell HEAVILY to the Democrats. So a minority of lawmakers are representing a majority of the population. Great. *headdesk*
