How many died in NOLA?

How many died in 9/11? 2749

We were told over and over. All the news was about the numbers... initial reports were “up to 50,000 people work in that building” and we were thankful when the numbers dropped, but angry when the

How many died in NOLA as a result of Katrina?

The Whitehouse has been extremely careful about steering anyone away from numbers. In fact, most mentions of any death disappeared once the Whitehouse woke up and started managing the PR side of things.

I want to say “they are brilliant that way” but then I realize, when you’ve got all the major networks in your pocket, how brilliant do you have to be?

So, does anyone have a number or estimate?

The last number I saw was about 900, but you're right, any updates have been as rare as hen's teeth lately. This occurred to me the other day as well, and since then I haven't been able to find any updated estimates in mainstream media.

Of course, you realize that anytime you bring up the numbers, wingnuts will blame you for being "ghoulish" and "obsessed with failure".

Best I could find is here but it seems pretty clear that's low. (1033 on Sept 21)

Last I saw they only used 500 of the 25,000 body bags that were sent down there.

Also amazing is how all the reports of looting, rape, murder, deaths, etc., were all proven to be "greatly exaggerated"

Every other day or so I search Google News for "katrina death toll." They are still counting the dead, and right now for both LA and MS the toll is something around 1100.

(PS Hi, found you via friends of friends.)

Goto the 'Pedia

Is there anything that 'pedia can't do? Okay, well lots of stuff... but...

1,163 As of ... sometime.

Tends to put it all into a little bit better perspective.

It will be interesting to wait and find out if the number of people missing after katrina is around the same number as the number of dead. It'll of course take years to figure that out.

Last I saw on the Weather Channel, the NOLA total was in the 900's. (There were hundreds more in MS and elsewhere.)

I've noticed the same lack of information though re numbers. It's pretty sad the only place I've heard a number from is the Weather Channel.

This morning, NPR said the current official numbers were 964 in Louisiana, 221 in Mississippi.

And then there are the 500 prisoners who were left locked in their cells and are now just "missing."
