Film Review: Sideways

Sideways: Wow, what a great flick. And to think that I was going to see it when it was an unknown independent flick only being played at art-houses. We went to see it this weekend at the huge Loews theater near us.

It was, amazingly enough, the first time I’ve been in a movie theater when a cell phone went off during the film. Of course, it was during one of the most dramatic and critical scenes (when Maya is describing why she loves wine) and totally ruined it. Ugh.

Anyway, I really hope this film wins an Oscar or two. It deserves it.

It's a delightful movie. Unfortunately, I don't have high hopes for it at the Oscars. It's mostly going to be a horse race between The Aviator and Million Dollar Baby. I don't think Sideways is going to take the screenplay award over MDB, Payne is not going to win best director over both Eastwood and Scorcese, and Thomas Haden Church is not going to win the supporting oscar over Morgan Freeman. It sucks for the film that it's up against such stiff competition this year.

I actually saw that in an appallingly bowdlerized version on the plane on the way to Hawai'i. By "appallingly", I mean not just that it was appalling that it had been bowdlerized, but that it was done very very badly. Stuff like "You need to be [*click*, slightly different voice] loved [*click*], man, and it's my job to see that you get [*click, slightly different voice] loved." However, I was very amused that the word the censors spliced in in place of "asshole" was "Ashcroft". (I think "Clymer" would have been even more amusing, though.)
