I love wireless technology

Now that the NJ GLBTI Community Center has WiFi, it’s amazing what can happen.

I was there last night to help stuff envelopes for [the event that all my local friends with spare $75 better attend, please please please I’ll be your best friend]. I had my laptop with me. Any time we found an address label with a potentially incorrect address, I would use their WiFi to look up the person’s new address, and update it in our web-based member management system. I was also updating the website of the organization in real time as we found things like, ummm... the mailing listed the URL slightly wrong (so I set up a redirect).

While doing that, I got a phone call on my cell from someone in California who had a bunch of questions. While talking with him, I was IM’ing with a co-worker that was resolving another issue.

When that was done, I got an IM from [livejournal.com profile] qnetter who was about to hop on an airplane and needed fast advice about FreeBSD and in particular Postfix. He emailed me the output of some diagnostics I requested from him. A few Google searches later and I had the answer for him.

Returning to the meeting there were some other issues I was involved in that were helped by checking a few web sites.

I lost count, but all-told I think between the cell phone and the WiFi I was able to resolve about 10 problems in one hour.

Yay for constant access. What *did* we do before?

I would run to a DrewPhone and leave voicemail for myself as a reminder of something I needed to do the next time I was near a PC. :-)
