Infant Care Class

I went to Infant Care Class today with Yang and Ping (co-words for one of my SOs (Yang) and her housemate/partner/tocotox (Pang) who will be raising this child together).

I learned a lot. Nobody asked us why there were 3 people taking the class together (everyone else was there as a pair, except one single woman).

When it came time for each mother to introduce themselves and their partner, it dawned on me that we'd never discussed how we'd expain, or not explain things. When it was Yang's turn, she just said, "I'm (Yang's real name) and this is (Pang's real name) and (YesThatTom's real name."

Nobody blinked and the class continued.

In my experience, it seems that when a baby is in the middle of an equation, people tend to be a bit more oblivious to what in another circumstance would seem perculiar to them.

When K. went to give birth to O., accompanied by M. and me, the midwife said "So this is Dad, and...and you are...."

"It's a long story..."

"Whatever"

My ex-girlfriend had to have a C-section (we were together at that time), so the midwife had her transferred to a hospital. At one point, the anesthestiologist (in purple scrubs) says, "OK, we have the husband, the wife's girlfriend , the wife's ex-girlfriend, and the husband's boyfriend...how festive!"

I think he got it :-)

If the anesthesiologist's name was Mike, I'll be very very scared.

(Did anyone else flash on the Leonard-n-Larry birthing routine?)

we've got a fair amount of experience in sharing care across more than two people - if you want to chat about it sometime let me know.

oh, and http://www.catya.org/parenting.html might be worth a read for you.

enjoy!

Heehee!

I am very amused! :-)

When I read the Leonard and Larry graphic novel a few years after that incident, I nearly plotzed! Think I can get royalties??
