What's a Democrat?

Boiling it down sounds like this:
  • “Republicans only work for the wealthy, Democrats fight for the rest of us.”
  • “Republicans block the door, Democrats open it up for all of us.”
  • “Republicans use religion to divide, Democrats learn from it to build communities.”
  • “Republicans help industry pollute, Democrats protect our land for everyone.”
  • “Republicans work against The Constitution, Democrats protect it.”
  • “Republicans are suspicious of difference, Democrats are passionate about equality.”

Theater Review: Rent

I saw Rent last night on Broadway. It was... ok.

Am I the only person in the world to watch it and not think it was so wonderful? Maybe it was more powerful 9 years ago when it came out (1996) and certainly maybe the original cast was a lot better. Or am I just jaded? Would I appreciate it better if I was a bigger Opera fan?

It was depressing, the plot was difficult to follow and thin, and the big conflict was trite, and the resolution was, um, what was the resolution?

Yes, the funeral scene was sad, but it was mostly painful because it brought up memories of the aids/hiv funerals that I’ve attended.

Maybe in 1996 it was more powerful. Or maybe it’s powerful to str8 people that watched it but to people that “were there” it was just a painful record of what was happening [and I hardly was “there”, I was reading about it from a birdseye view while doing related-but-disconnected political activism]

Can someone fill me in?

The NYC Boston Comedy Club

Last night we went to the 8pm show at “The Boson Comedy Club” in New York City. $12 and two drink minimum.

There were four comedians, including headliner Mike Briggs.

The entire show was ruined by a drunk white chick from Jersey that kept heckling incoherently, and a drunk black woman from Brooklyn who kept trying to pick fights with the comedians.

Each comedian was unprepared for what they faced. They tried to address the women, which just spurred them on. Each would make the same tactical mistake early on and end up basically unable to do their comedy. The final comedian basically SCREEEEAMED at the Jersey chick for 20 minutes, told 1-2 jokes, and then left.

Brooklyn left early, much to our relief. However Jersey stayed to the end basically ruining the night for everyone.

Thanks, drunk chick. Thank you for wasting my night.

West Wing

C and I *finally* got around to seeing the last two episodes of The West Wing. There were certainly enough “holy shit!” moments to keep us on the edge of our seats.

SHORT SPOILER )
